Bruce Springsteen Critiques Democrats’ Communication
Rocker Bruce Springsteen recently expressed concerns about the Democratic Party’s ability to connect with the American public. He emphasized that if they can’t find someone who resonates with the majority of the country, they risk becoming irrelevant.
“We desperately need an effective alternative party, or someone Democrats can talk to the majority of the country,” he stated, highlighting issues with the language used and how it affects their outreach to people.
Having campaigned for notable Democrats like Kamala Harris in 2024 and Joe Biden in 2020, Springsteen’s views echo findings from a report by the think tank Third Way, which pointed out that Democratic language can confuse and alienate voters. The memo suggests that certain phrases should be discarded entirely.
- Therapy speak
- Seminar-room jargon
- Expert-level terminology
- Gender/Orientation sensitivities
- Racial structural language
- Crime descriptions
A commentator, John Norte, translated some of these terms into more relatable language for the average person:
- Incarnated individuals [thugs]
- Judicial involvement [thug]
- Conversations [chats]
- Triggers [speaking truth]
- Minor altercation [offending someone overly sensitive]
- Body shaming [humorous weight jokes]
- Social norms [typical Democratic behavior]
- Systematic oppression [undermining merit]
- Cultural borrowing [eating with chopsticks while enjoying a show]
- Unused individuals [homeless people]
- Food scarcity [running out of essentials at the month’s end]
- Housing worries [facing homelessness due to financial choices]
- Those who moved here [immigrants]
- Birthing individuals [women]
- Expecting individuals [pregnant women]
- Cisgender [typical individuals]
- Renaming [Bruce Jenner is still Bruce Jenner to me]
- Heteronormative issues [meaning unclear]
- Minority communities [underrepresented groups]
- LGBTQIA+ [the LGBTQ community]
- Involuntary detention [justice]
Many elected Democrats have attempted to distance themselves from this type of language, opting for more straightforward speech in public appearances. Yet, these efforts don’t seem to have made a significant impact.
Almost a year after losing a pivotal presidential election, Democrats continue to struggle with voter confidence on critical issues such as the economy, crime, immigration, and others. At this point, many voters still seem to trust Republicans more on these topics.
