Amber Glenn Responds to Critics After Olympic Victory
American figure skater Amber Glenn, who recently secured Olympic gold, is facing backlash from some supporters after her comments on LGBTQ+ issues. She suggested that the LGBTQ+ community in the U.S. is experiencing significant challenges, particularly during Donald Trump’s presidency, which stirred controversy among her fanbase. In response to the negative feedback, Glenn stepped back from social media, citing the “hate” she has encountered.
However, following her gold medal win, Glenn took to TikTok to address her critics directly. She remarked, “They hate to see two woke bitches win,” explaining that if being “woke” involves using a platform to advocate for marginalized groups, then so be it.
Last week, Glenn mentioned to reporters that homosexuals are facing harm in the United States. “It’s been a difficult time for the entire community and for this administration. This isn’t the first time we’ve needed to unite as a community to fight for our rights,” she noted. Glenn emphasized that the effects extend beyond the queer community, impacting various other groups as well.
She believes that the LGBTQ+ community can now support one another in ways that weren’t possible before. “I hope that through the game I can use my platform and voice to help people stay strong during these difficult times,” she added, highlighting the interconnectedness of politics and personal lives.
In her Instagram Story, Glenn reflected on the backlash, stating, “During a difficult time for many Americans, I chose to use one of the great things about the United States (freedom of speech) to voice my feelings as an athlete, and now I am receiving horrific amounts of hate and threats just for expressing my views.” She mentioned that the reaction was expected but still disappointing. For her well-being, she plans to limit her time on social media while affirming her commitment to speaking out for her beliefs.
