President Washington Wiese JD Vance paid tribute to fallen American law enforcement officers on Thursday during the 44th annual Peace Officer Memorial ceremony at the U.S. Capitol.
Vance served as the keynote speaker at the ceremony, which was attended by family, friends, and colleagues of officers who had died in the line of duty. Second Lady Ushavance and various officials, including Attorney General Pam Bondy and FBI Director Kash Patel, were also present.
“In America, we pay respect to those who value a peaceful society and, as the president mentioned, have chosen to sacrifice their lives to protect the delicate line between civilization and chaos,” Vance stated.
“Today, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice at that line of duty,” he added.
Vance underscored that the courage of fallen officers stemmed from an “unshakeable belief that our civilization is worth defending.”
He continued:
Every morning, they donned their uniforms, said goodbye to their loved ones, and embraced the unknown. While others fled, they moved toward danger. They didn’t waver; they stood tall when others couldn’t. These officers upheld the law, ensuring that the balance between civilization and chaos allowed freedom to be more than just a promise. It is integral to our everyday lives, the bedrock of our prosperity, and the essence of America’s greatness.
Vance acknowledged the “debt” he feels towards those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
He assured that their sacrifices held great value, expressing compassion for the families of the fallen officers. “Today, I want to address all those who are mourning here: Your loss is a loss for our entire nation. Your sorrow is our sorrow, your heartbreak is our heartbreak.”
“I believe our administration, and all of America, stands with you as fellow citizens, grateful for the ultimate sacrifices made by your loved ones,” he added.
The Vice President reiterated, “Their names will always be remembered, and their acts of heroism will serve as an inspiration for our nation and fill us with profound purpose.”
Vance concluded his remarks by hoping for blessings for the deceased officers.
President Donald Trump, wrapping up his third trip to the Middle East, sent a video message to the ceremony. “On Peace Officers’ Memorial Day, we honor those who protected our laws and made the highest sacrifices. Last year, 147 officers lost their lives while serving,” he stated.
“They were among the finest of us. We cherish their memories and embrace the families they’ve left behind,” he added, also directing the Justice Department to pursue the death penalty for individuals who kill law enforcement officers, receiving applause from the audience.
