Manga Fans Bid Farewell to a Beloved Spot

Fans of manga and anime are facing the loss of a cherished venue.

Things From Another World, the iconic comics and collectibles retailer owned by Dark Horse Comics, is set to shut down all its locations after 46 years in operation. This includes its flagship store at Universal CityWalk in Los Angeles.

The announcement came through a statement from Dark Horse Comics, noting that stores in Milwaukee and Beaverton, Oregon, will close by June 30, while the prominent Universal CityWalk store will shut its doors on September 30.

No specific rationale for the closures was provided.

Dark Horse said in their communication, “This was not an easy decision to make, and we do not take lightly the impact it will have on those affected.”

This closure signifies the end of an era for comic lovers and pop culture enthusiasts who have frequented the store for years, hunting for rare comics, toys, collectibles, and movie memorabilia.

Since its debut in 1993, the flagship store has become a significant draw for visitors to Universal Studios.

This decision follows the quiet closure of their online store on April 30, 2025, effectively halting online sales for customers. Dark Horse mentioned that the shutdown is part of a larger strategy to “modernize” and reorganize under Fellowship Entertainment.

In line with this transformation, the company has introduced Dark Horse Games, a new venture aimed at expanding their franchises into the realm of interactive entertainment.

Founded in 1986, Dark Horse is currently recognized as the fifth largest comic book publisher in the U.S., trailing behind DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Image Comics, and IDW Publishing.
