Thinking about this photo makes me feel sentimental: Karen Weideman’s favorite phone shot

She restored the heritage village of Old Petry, which is about a 90-minute drive from the farm in Queensland, Australia, where Karen Wideman lives. Along with her husband Michael, they returned in 2022 and snapped a photo with their iPhone 11. The town stretches over a 48-acre park, featuring buildings that date back to the 1800s. There are markets, museums, and galleries to explore. As for food? Absolutely delicious. They enjoyed an amazing chicken satay for lunch. When the rain started, they began heading home, but not before spotting some beautiful old buses on the way.

Always on the lookout for something new to photograph, Karen asked Michael to step inside and pose. “He’s incredibly patient and my biggest cheerleader,” she adds. His support means a lot to her. She later made some minimal edits using the Snapseed app.

While she captured a somewhat melancholic mood, her own feelings regarding the photo evolved over time, leaving room for the audience’s interpretation. “Looking back at this picture, I feel emotional, especially since my husband is battling Stage 4 metastatic melanoma,” she says. “It seems like he’s trapped behind the glass, reaching out to me. I feel helpless as the bus departs and his journey unfolds.”
