Third South Dakota tribal nation bans Noem from reservation

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has become the third tribal nation to ban Kristi Noem (R) of South Dakota from its reservation.

On Wednesday, the Standing Rock Tribal Council accused Noem of “racial harassment” at a town hall event, alleging that some tribal leaders “personally benefit” from Mexican drug cartel activity on the reservation. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe straddles the border between North and South Dakota. The governor was banned from two other reservations earlier this year, which began after he made remarks at the U.S.-Mexico border in February.

Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Chairwoman Janet Alkire said in a release that Noem’s attempts to link the tribe to Mexican cartels are “irresponsible” and that “we are bringing people together to solve problems. “It’s a sad reflection of her fear-based politics, which is particularly unhelpful.”
