Third-team Jets show off their skills as stars can’t complete grabs

Observations from Tuesday’s Jets training camp practice:

Big Profits

The longest pass didn’t come from the Jets’ first team. Hamzeh El-Zayat caught an over-the-shoulder pass from third-quarterback Adrian Martinez for a big gain, and the offensive team sprinted down the field in celebration of the rookie’s big catch.

Butterfinger

Garrett Wilson and Allen Lazard both failed to complete deep passes from Aaron Rodgers. Wilson made a one-handed grab on a long pass, nearly catching it but not reaching it. He was clutching his helmet in frustration.

Then, deep on the right side of the field, Rodgers had a clear target on Lazard, but the sixth-year wide receiver dropped the ball out of bounds.

It caught my eye

Xavier Gipson returned to practice and caught a few passes from Rodgers, including one up the middle while Rodgers was running. The second-year receiver had previously missed a week with a leg injury.

The Rogers Report

Rodgers completed 11 of 21 passes on Tuesday and was sacked once, unofficially. He only found success on short, quick passes and runs, particularly with Breece Hall.

Rodgers threw the ball to Hall twice for sizeable gains and then found the versatile third-year running back for a couple of catches over the middle.

Injury Report

LT Tyron Smith missed team practice, which allowed Olu Fashanu to work more in 11-on-11 drills. S Ashtyn Davis was hit in the ribs during team practice and left the field, according to coach Robert Saleh. They await evaluation to determine next steps. CB Michael Carter II (ankle) missed his third consecutive practice with lower leg tightness.
