Karen Finney, a Democratic strategist and former Hillary Clinton spokesman, said Thursday evening of CNN that the call-out for Governor Gavin Newsom, a biological male participating in women's sports, was a “clear gimmick.”
Newsom announced a new podcast on February 26th entitled “This Is Gavin Newsom,” saying it would spark “some of the biggest leaders and architects of the Maga movement.” In his first episode, the Democratic governor hosted Turning Point USA's Charlie Kirk and made the headline after saying it was “deeply unfair” to involve biological men in women's sports.
In “Source with Kaitlan Collins,” Collins asked fellow guests David Axelrod and Finney about their thoughts on Newsom's sudden stance. (Related: 'f*ck you!': Megyn Kelly lists Dems that “have to target” in the mid-term after refusing to protect women's sports)
“What bothered me about the whole incident was that it was a very obvious gimmick, right? He needed some headlines to say, 'Broken from the left'. And what will he do? He chooses – out of all the people you can choose to say, “Hey, I want to talk to someone who's coming from a different perspective than me,” Finney said.
“It was such a gimmick. At David's point, it's like thirst is dripping from him, and it just stops it. It's gross,” Finney added. “You know he's basically using the left. These are people who have had his back for a very long time when they actually tried to remember him. I just don't think people are going to take it too kind to it.”

Since the Newsom episode was announced, some of his fellow party members have criticized the governor's statement, with the California Legislature's LGBTQ Caucus issued a joint statement from Congressional members Chris Ward and Senator Caroline Menjivar. I'm saying They were “deeply disgusted and frustrated” by their comments.
Finney said her issues with the governor's comments stem from the way he “deviled people.” She said she attended “college sports” and didn't believe that “trans people felt fair,” but she said she could stand against Kirk.
“The conversation he might have is that you don't have to demonize people,” Finney said. “Do you need to demonize a child who is trans, vulnerable and has high suicide rates? Instead of a gush like in Charlie Kirk, about 'Oh, you weaponize it'. Would you like to stand up? ”
Newsom's statement comes days after a Democratic senator blocked the protection of women and girls in sports on Monday evening, a Republican Alabama senator attempted to ban trans athletes from girls and women's sports.
However, despite Newsom's comments, the governor's track record supports promoting his state's transgender rights, as he supports policies such as allowing men in women's prisons and allowing schools to personally transfer children without parental knowledge or consent.
