On Friday, a significant prisoner swap took place between Ukraine and Russia, marking a notable shift in a conflict that has dragged on for over three years.
President Trump announced the completion of the exchange in a post on Truth Social, just prior to 6 AM. He noted, “The exchange of major prisoners between Russia and Ukraine has just been completed. It will come into effect soon.”
He congratulated both parties on this negotiation, referring to the agreement reached during the initial direct peace talks between the two nations, which have been at war since the early days of Russia’s invasion in 2022.
Trump also posed a question: “Could this lead to something big?”
In a tense two-hour discussion held in Istanbul last week, both countries consented to exchange 1,000 prisoners.
Previous swaps have seen the United Arab Emirates playing a mediating role.
Ukrainian military officials confirmed that the swap had commenced, although there was no immediate confirmation from Moscow about the ongoing exchange.
