‘This Movement Cannot Be Stopped’

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Black Republican delegates held their first formal meeting at the Republican National Convention, joining a growing number of Black Republican lawmakers under the Trump administration.

The event, which drew about 200 participants, was organized by the National Association of Black Republican Mayors and featured Richard Irving, the black Republican mayor of Aurora, Illinois’ second-largest city after Chicago.

Irving said it is black voices that will “lead us to the promised land of political victory.”

Rep. Burgess Owens (R-Utah) said the meeting was the fulfillment of a vision he has had since leaving the NFL in 1983. He said that thanks to the growth of the conservative movement among black voters, black conservatives now have hope that they can save the black community from Marxism, communism and left-wing policies.

Several other elected officials also spoke at the rally, including Rep. Byron Donald (R-Fla.) and Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Texas).

Sen. Tim Scott (R-South Carolina) said at the rally that the black conservative movement was “unstoppable,” a sentiment echoed by other black officials.

Increased black representation and participation in Republican politics has been a hallmark of the Trump era, yet ironically, Trump is frequently portrayed as a racist by Democrats and the media.

Recent polls have shown that Trump is gaining popularity among black voters, especially men.
