This town is the most welcoming in America

The charming community of Tryon, located in southern Appalachia, is often referred to as “America’s Friendliest Town.” Realtor Holly Dake mentioned that the origin of this nickname is somewhat of a mystery, but it certainly has become part of the town’s identity.

“It’s always been that way. That’s what the town calls itself. Everybody helps everybody here,” Dake shared. “We are like the world’s best-kept secret.”

Tryon sits about an hour away from Asheville, which is the most popular city in Western North Carolina. Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, its two square miles are renowned for stunning natural scenery. In the fall, the mountains burst into color, and during spring, rhododendrons and laurels thrive.

This picturesque setting can uplift anyone’s spirits, yet locals say the warmth of Tryon is something special—so much so that it has even been a filming location for a Hallmark movie.

Dake noted that the town’s beautiful Main Street was recently featured in a new Christmas film called “Downtown Christmas.”

With a population of around 1,562, Tryon also boasts affordable housing prices. The median home sale price is approximately $366,000, which, alongside low property taxes, attracts many residents.

Despite the reasonable costs, Tryon draws wealthier visitors, particularly in the summer. Known for its rich equestrian culture, the area hosts numerous horse and fox hunting ranches, as well as the Tryon International Equestrian Center. The town has also been home to the annual Blockhouse Steeplechase since 1946, supported by various established equestrian organizations.

In addition to its appealing housing and cultural activities, Tryon offers delightful nearby vineyards, seasonal festivals, and a treasure trove of antiques, enriching the experience of anyone who visits this charming town.
