This weekend's nor'easter storm may affect February's Snow Moon.

The full moon in February is approaching, and it’s particularly exciting for astronomy enthusiasts. This month’s full moon is commonly referred to as the Snow Moon, a name derived from the significant snowfall typically seen across the United States during this time.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, it has several other names too—like the Bald Eagle Moon, Bear Moon, Goose Moon, Groundhog Moon, Storm Moon, and Hungry Moon.

Mark your calendars, as the second full moon of the year will illuminate the winter sky on February 1st, making its appearance around 5:09 PM ET.

For optimal viewing, it’s best to look from the east as the moon rises. This event provides a fantastic chance for sky-watchers to appreciate celestial wonders against a backdrop of snow-covered landscapes.

However, those in areas bracing for a nor’easter may find this full moon experience less enjoyable.

The FOX Prediction Center forecasts the development of a potent nor’easter off the East Coast this weekend. The National Weather Service has alerted residents that heavy snowfall is likely in much of the Carolinas and southern Virginia, extending into Friday night.

Additionally, the storm could bring strong winds that, combined with the snow, may impair visibility and complicate travel.

Interestingly, during the full and new moon phases, the moon’s alignment with the sun creates what are known as spring tides. This phenomenon results in higher high tides and lower low tides.

It’s worth noting that storms that coincide with these full moon periods can escalate the risk of coastal flooding due to the way onshore winds influence tide heights.

Residents along the Mid-Atlantic coast should be particularly cautious, as this full moon might elevate flooding risks in their regions. So, it seems that while some might enjoy the moonlight, others could face challenges because of it.
