‘This will absolutely kill college sports’: Dartmouth men’s basketball ends bid to become first NCAA player’s union

Dartmouth's men's basketball team has withdrawn its bid to unionize after more than a year of legal battles.

The petition was first filed in September 2023 and finally voted on in March 2024, passing by a vote of 13-2, granting membership into the Service Employees International Union Local 560 chapter.

The union then began representing Dartmouth players, as they were already working with hiring blocks on other campuses.

After the team was selected, Dartmouth refused to bargain collectively with the players and made it clear that they would not be considered school employees.

“This would completely eliminate college sports.”

According to on 3In response, the players filed an unfair labor practice complaint with the National Labor Relations Board, claiming Dartmouth was not negotiating in “good faith.”

Former college football coach and Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) said at the time that the unionization effort would “ruin” college sports.

“They're going to kill the goose that laid the golden egg — the athletes, too — because that's what's going to pay for everything. Scholarships go to both men and women, but There are a lot of people who don't bring money to college,” Tuberville explained.

“What happens here is that you see a group of people. [that are] They will try to form a union, and it will spread throughout the country. We've been fighting it here. [Democrat] “Joe Manchin and I introduced a bipartisan NIL bill that blocked unionization, but Democrats wanted unionization,” Tuberville continued.

Tuberville also expressed his belief that college athletes are “not employees.”

“These students are student-athletes. And if you want to mess something up by getting the federal government involved, you're going to try to turn student-athletes into employees. Soon the federal government will be involved, and the unions will be involved. “And it would be a complete disaster.” ”

“This would completely eliminate college sports,” he added.

Just before the new year, Dartmouth's men's basketball team withdrew its petition to unionize, a move Local 560 president Chris Peck announced even as he sought to change the situation positively.

”[The athletes] It advanced the conversation around employment and collective bargaining in college sports, making history by being classified as an employee, winning the union election 13-2, and becoming the nation's first recognized bargaining unit for college athletes. ”

The union also accused Dartmouth of choosing not to “respect the team's decisions” and of “refusing to negotiate” federal labor laws and violating its own code of ethical business conduct.

of letter Front Office Sports' Amanda Kristovich added: “While our strategy is changing, we will continue to advocate for fair compensation, adequate health insurance, and safe working conditions for Dartmouth's varsity athletes.” Ta.

The local union said it represents 500 workers at Dartmouth College, including power plant, custodial, security and athletic department employees.
