Enrollment Changes Impacting Maine Seniors
As of September, over 13,111 individuals were enrolled in nine Medicare Advantage plans that will be discontinued after 2027.
Recent analysis indicates that many seniors in Maine are facing challenges in selecting their Medicare options following the cancellation of several plans by Martin’s Point. In addition, five other providers are dropping plans, impacting thousands of residents. More broadly, around 31,788 individuals have signed up for 11 plans that will no longer provide coverage in their county.
“When your plan is being discontinued, it’s crucial to find a new one for the coming year to avoid coverage gaps starting in January,” stated Chloe Gray, who manages the Medicare counseling program at Age Maine.
Gray noted that this year, all one-on-one counseling appointments are fully booked, and the requests for assistance have nearly doubled. Last October, there were about 850 inquiries, but already this month, over 1,500 calls have been received.
“We’ve observed significant premium increases for next year, along with a reduction in some additional plan benefits,” Gray mentioned. “This trend seems quite widespread among Medicare Advantage plans and also affects original Medicare’s prescription drug costs.”
Even seniors whose plans are not being canceled are experiencing major changes, including rising premiums and reductions in vision, dental, and prescription drug coverage, as well as adjustments to provider networks.
“It feels like I have to change plans almost every year because the coverages vary or the primary care doctors change regularly,” remarked John St. Hilaire, who attended a Medicare enrollment session with his wife, Laurie.
The St. Hilares regularly sign up for counseling sessions and typically schedule their appointments well in advance. John believes that navigating these changes shouldn’t be so complicated, yet they appreciate the help they receive.
“We’re truly fortunate to have support from organizations like Age Maine,” Laurie added.
Medicare’s open enrollment concludes on December 7, but individuals whose plans have been terminated can choose a new plan until the end of the year. Moreover, those enrolled in Medicare Advantage can switch plans from January through March if necessary.
Although all counseling sessions are booked, various resources remain accessible. These include a comparison tool available on the Medicare website, instructional videos, and a dedicated hotline.
