Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, a Democrat, said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that threats against election officials are “domestic terrorism.”
“One of the key pieces is the idea that it’s not just us on TV who run elections. There are tens of thousands of jurisdictions across the United States. They’re run by your neighbors, they’re run by your friends,” Fontes said.
Asked about receiving threats, he added: “It affected all of us. It affected our whole family.”
Fontes added, “It goes back to what I was saying earlier, one of the ways that I’ve looked at and addressed this issue is by telling a very hard truth, which is that threats against election officials of the United States are domestic terrorism. Terrorism is defined as the threat or violence against a political outcome, and that’s what it is. I think the Department of Justice is really stepping up and beginning to prosecute. We’re working with law enforcement across the country to start taking a serious look at these issues. It’s not too late.”
