Over the weekend, three climbers from Renton, Washington, tragically lost their lives during a climb in North Cascade National Park.
According to the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office and Search and Rescue Service, they responded to an accident report around 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. This incident took place near a north winter spire, located about 16 miles west of Mazama, Washington.
Reports indicate that a group of four climbers, all from Renton, experienced a fall while making their way down a steep gully. Upon arriving, the rescue team discovered that three climbers had died at the scene.
The climbers were aged 36, 47, and 63, as confirmed by the Okanogan County Coroner’s Office. Meanwhile, the fourth climber, who was able to exit the area safely, contacted authorities for assistance.
The Snohomish County helicopter rescue team assisted in recovering the bodies from the challenging terrain. A preliminary investigation suggested that the fall occurred after an anchor failed while the climbers were rappelling down.
The National Park Service has yet to comment on the incident, and the Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude to the rescue volunteers and helicopter crew for their efforts during this tragic situation. They also extended their condolences to the families and friends of those involved.
