Cowboys Players Fined After Season Opener
During the Dallas Cowboys’ season-opening defeat to the New York Giants, three players were fined by the NFL for infractions they committed during the game.
Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, defensive end Donovan Ezeiruaku, and running back Javonte Williams faced fines totaling $33,409, according to the latest NFL accountability report.
Overshown incurred a $9,527 penalty for a late hit on Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart with just under ten minutes left in the first quarter. This unnecessary roughness penalty allowed New York to move 15 yards downfield, which eventually led to a touchdown.
Ezeiruaku received an $11,941 fine for grabbing a facemask of a Giants player with only 2:10 remaining in the fourth quarter. This penalty was crucial, as it allowed the Giants to run down the clock and secure a 28-20 win.
Williams was fined $11,941 as well for taunting Giants safety Tyler Nubin after scoring a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Following his score, he held the ball towards Nubin, which resulted in a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty enforced during the extra-point attempt. This led Brandon Aubrey to miss a 48-yard kick, forcing Dallas to trail by eight.
Reflecting on his actions, Williams admitted, “I don’t know why I did it. It’s just out of character. You don’t have to worry about that no more. The damage is already done. It’s my fault. I’m better than that. I’m a pro.”
In total, the Cowboys were penalized nine times, while the Giants were penalized eleven times, contributing to a combined total of 20 penalties for both teams in the matchup.
