Three important narratives for the F1 Miami Grand Prix

MIAMI, Fla. – Grand Prix Sunday is always full of stories, and today’s Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix is no different. With intriguing narratives throughout the lineup, fans and celebrities flocking to the Miami International Autodrome near Hard Rock Stadium, 20 drivers are set to push their limits and create thrilling moments for everyone watching.

Still, there are three key storylines to keep an eye on during the Miami Grand Prix.

What happens in Turn 1?

Turn 1 has been a hot topic after the last two races.

During the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, there was a notable battle for Turn 1 between polesitter Max Verstappen and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. Piastri had a fantastic start, racing towards the left at Turn 1 alongside Verstappen. Instead of yielding his position, Verstappen remained on the line, claiming that Piastri forced him off track.

Yet, former driver and current F1TV analyst Jolyon Palmer argued that Piastri was entitled to have a front wheel alongside Verstappen upon entering the turn, and racing regulations permit attacking drivers to utilize the full width of the road.

Red Bull decided against switching positions, leading to Verstappen receiving a five-second penalty, which ultimately opened the door for Piastri to take the lead.

You can catch the incident from different perspectives:

In yesterday’s F1 sprint race, conditions were wet, and once again, Piastri found himself in P2, battling Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli at Turn 1.

A visibly frustrated Antonelli later discovered that officials would not penalize Piastri, replying, “It’s good to know.”

Now, as we head into Turn 1 this time, we have another exciting matchup. Verstappen starts from the pole, with Lando Norris right behind him, Antonelli in third, and Piastri in fourth. It promises to be an engaging start. Let’s not forget last season’s U.S. Grand Prix, when Verstappen pressured pole sitter Norris, allowing Charles Leclerc to take the lead on the first lap.

Will a big day come for Williams?

Both Carlos Sainz Jr. and Alexander Albon were optimistic after Saturday’s qualifying session.

And they had a good reason for it.

Sainz finished sixth, while Albon secured seventh, placing them ahead of both Williams cars after Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. Speaking to the media, including SB Nation, Sainz expressed surprise that the Miami circuit suited the FW47 so well, given that it was his sixth race with the team.

Despite being handed penalties from the sprint race just before qualifying, Albon performed remarkably well, pushing through the challenges.

“It’s tough to enter qualifying right after a penalty from a strong sprint race, but I rose to the occasion. I’m pleased with P7, and having both cars in Q3 is fantastic for the team. Our pace is solid, which will help us in the race,” he commented.

Team Principal James Bowles highlighted the team’s resilience and the gratifying results.

“What I appreciate about this team is our ability to bounce back when challenges arise. It’s gratifying to see everyone eager to show that we have a competitive car this weekend. The qualifying went smoothly, and the results reflect hard work. We’ve got a strong car for the race tomorrow—though we know fast competitors are behind us—our goal is to get both cars in contention,” Bowles remarked.

Considering what they’ve shown and the performance of the FW47 in Miami, Williams seems poised to achieve just that.

A surprise in the weather?

So, what’s the last big question as the race begins?

What’s the weather looking like today?

The rain from the previous day led to a chaotic sprint race, including a crash by Leclerc on a reconnaissance lap, which has the weather in focus today. According to late Saturday-night predictions:

Many drivers, including Fernando Alonso and Nico Hulkenberg, mentioned that weather conditions can add unpredictability to the Grand Prix, offering chances for drivers starting farther down the grid.

Is that really going to hold true today?
