Three missing men discovered deceased in the Mississippi River near a sandbar following an overnight search

Three Men Found Dead in Mississippi River

Authorities located the bodies of three men in the Mississippi River close to Memphis, Tennessee. The men had gone missing while fishing and swimming at a sandbar on Wednesday.

Reportedly, the missing person, aged between their 20s and 50s, was last seen near a boat ramp at the Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park, roughly 13 miles north of Memphis. Search efforts began on Tuesday evening, executed by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and local deputies, but were halted when darkness set in.

The search resumed early Wednesday morning, utilizing aircraft, drones, and sonar technology. By 11 a.m., the first two bodies were recovered, followed by a third around 12:45 p.m. The medical examiner was tasked with determining the cause of death.

Authorities identified the deceased as Marlon Mendes, 28; Rudy Perez, 31; and Jose Janez, 52. The group had been enjoying the sandbar, a natural formation created by sediment deposits from the river’s swift current. Unfortunately, these sandbars can be precarious and collapse under weight, especially during changing water conditions.

Officials warned that while the area attracts more visitors, the river poses significant dangers, such as strong currents and hidden debris. An expert noted, “There’s an eddy current that can pull even the strongest swimmers. You may find yourself in a channel as wide as a barge.”

Family members of one of the victims shared their grief, mentioning he leaves behind six children, the youngest being just 12. A local store owner expressed concern about the river’s hazards, stating, “This is a terrible tragedy that happens too often. The risk without proper safety gear is just too high.”
