Trade Rumors Surrounding Anthony Davis
The Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks, and Toronto Raptors are poised to make offers for Anthony Davis this season, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. As we get closer to December 15th, trade talks might intensify, as it marks the date when most summer 2025 free agents become eligible for contracts.
Davis recently returned to the Mavericks after dealing with a calf sprain earlier this season. He’s had some standout moments lately, notably scoring 29 points during an unexpected victory over the Houston Rockets on Saturday. Just last week, he put up 32 points and grabbed 13 rebounds against the Denver Nuggets in a solid 32-minute performance, contributing to another win for Dallas.
When Davis is healthy, his skill is undeniable. Before the notable trade involving Luka Doncic last year, he was performing at a top-10 level in the league. However, he turns 33 in March and has a reputation for being injury-prone, alongside a substantial contract. Next season, he will earn $58.5 million, and he also has a player option worth $62.8 million for 2027-28.
The Pistons, Hawks, and Raptors all appear to be serious contenders in the Eastern Conference. It’s noteworthy that traditional favorites like the Cleveland Cavaliers and New York Knicks have shown some early vulnerabilities. Currently, Detroit boasts an impressive 19-5 record, positioning them at the top of the Eastern Conference. The Raptors hold a 15-10 record but have struggled recently, losing five out of their last six games. Meanwhile, the Hawks have been performing decently without their star player, Trae Young, with Jalen Johnson stepping up as a leader, though they risk slipping out of playoff contention.
Trading Davis could signal that the Pistons are committed to making a strong push this season. A consolidation trade would make sense for them, especially given their depth and the expiring $26 million contract of Tobias Harris. This trade is expected to finalize on December 15, with Harris, rookie Jaden Ivey, and Caris LeVert heading to Dallas.
For the Raptors, executing a trade for Davis would likely necessitate parting with two key players due to his significant salary. Would the Mavericks consider acquiring Brandon Ingram, who is in the first year of a three-year, $120 million deal with a player option for 2027-28? If not, a deal involving Jakob Poeltl, RJ Barrett, and a designated player could be feasible around January 15, provided Poeltl meets the trade qualifications.
We’ll keep track of this situation as it evolves.
