Cardinals Critique Trump’s Foreign Policy

Three U.S. Catholic cardinals have joined forces to criticize the foreign policy of the Trump administration, seemingly overlooking the American followers they are meant to guide.

Cardinal Blaise Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago; Cardinal Robert McElroy, Archbishop of Washington; and Cardinal Joseph Tobin, Archbishop of Newark, issued a noteworthy statement on Monday disputing President Trump’s policies related to Venezuela, Ukraine, and Greenland.

They contended, “Events in Venezuela, Ukraine, and Greenland have raised fundamental questions about military force and the essence of peace. The sovereignty of nations appears too vulnerable amid ongoing global conflicts.” The statement continued, denouncing war as a tool for narrow national interests and emphasizing that military action should only be a last resort. Instead, they advocate for a foreign policy focused on respecting human rights, religious freedom, and promoting human dignity, particularly through economic support.

As I reflect on this, I can’t help but feel there’s a disconnect. It’s interesting that these cardinals are outspoken about international issues while failing to address similar concerns domestically. For example, under a president who claims to be Catholic, America has seen border violations for four years, and yet there’s been silence on the inhumane policies affecting many families.

More than 300,000 migrant children are reportedly unaccounted for after crossing the southern border, with alarming implications. The Biden administration’s aggressive actions, such as sending armed agents to apprehend Catholics protecting children outside abortion clinics, raises questions. This approach seems excessively forceful, especially when people are being marginalized for choosing not to vaccinate. Parents are confronting an education system that some believe carries an anti-human curriculum. Where was the outcry then?

Take the tragic case of Jocelyn Nangaray, who was murdered following her assault. Yet Cupich, McElroy, and Tobin remained quiet. Their newfound interest in moral foreign policy coincides suspiciously with a departure from Trump’s agenda, aligning more with their political viewpoints.

They frame their criticism around the defense of human life and humanitarian efforts, which are undeniably important concerns. However, these cardinals seem to overlook significant domestic injustices that persisted under the previous administration. True Catholic morality requires not just being passive but having the courage to confront evil and advocate for justice.

The dynamics within the Catholic Church don’t mirror the political landscape in the U.S. This statement could represent a waning influence of a generation of liberal priests who might have lost sight of their community’s realities across America. Fortunately, a new wave of priests is stepping up, understanding the challenges we face today and guiding their congregations toward a deeper spiritual commitment.
