Three-time Olympic gold medalist Rai Benjamin lobbies for one-day contract with Giants: ‘I’ve got some cleats’

American track and field star Rhy Benjamin won his second and third Olympic gold medal in Paris, but now that he’s back in the states, the New York native is hoping his favorite NFL team gives him a chance to fulfill his football dreams.

Benjamin is a self-described New York Giants fan and has made no secret of his desire to play for Big Blue. He was a guest on “NFL on ESPN” recently, lobbying the Giants for an opportunity to showcase his skills.

The hurdler and sprinter said he was prepared to sign a short-term deal: “I just want to do a one-day deal.”

Benjamin said he wants to play offensively.

“That’s it. One day. I don’t need anything else. I’m fine with a one-day contract. I’ll play offensive line. Simple. Look, if you guys (the Giants) need me, just let me know right now. I have some pairs of cleats in my closet at home.”

Benjamin is no stranger to the football field.

Benjamin played wide receiver while at Mount Vernon High School, and also played defensive back and safety positions.

He eventually shifted his focus to track and field, winning a gold medal in the 4×400-meter relay at this year’s Summer Olympics. Benjamin also won gold in the same event at the 2020 Summer Olympics, which were postponed due to COVID-19.

He placed second in the 4x400m hurdles in Tokyo, winning the silver medal, but improved on that performance this year by winning the gold medal in the same event.

Benjamin’s speed will be an asset if he laces up the cleats and plays wide receiver opposite rookie Malik Neighbors.

Even if Benjamin only has a chance to participate in one practice, he’ll undoubtedly be part of one of the fastest groups of receivers in the NFL.
