Charges Filed in Boy’s Torture Death in Ohio
In Ohio, three individuals have been charged in connection to the horrific torture and death of a 7-year-old boy. Interestingly, authorities mention that two of the accused are men co-parenting the child alongside his mother.
Cincinnati police responded to a call on Thursday where a woman reported that someone was trying to kill her and her son.
“We saw injuries on the victim’s face, torso, back, and limbs that pointed to severe physical assault,” a police detective explained, describing blunt force trauma consistent with a striking instrument.
The situation escalated; the woman believed her partner intended to harm her and the boy, saying she was hiding him in the attic, sitting on the floor and rocking back and forth, barefoot.
Later that same day, officers arrived at a residence on Madison Road after receiving a report of a “suspicious death.” There they discovered William Evans-Ellis bound and wrapped in duct tape inside a closet. The police subsequently arrested both men involved in co-parenting the child, along with his mother.
Detective Kyle Smith, during court proceedings, remarked on the case’s disturbing nature: “From what we gathered, there were multiple injuries indicative of blunt force trauma, and signs of potential water torture were also found.” The boy reportedly suffered submerged for a significant period and showed signs of burn-related torture, with duct tape restraining him.
The child was revealed to have mental disabilities as well.
Caitlin Evans, the biological mother, acknowledged in court that she failed to protect her son but denied any involvement in his death, shifting blame towards one of the co-parents.
Meanwhile, lawyers representing 23-year-old Nessa Keeney argued that she had attempted to provide therapy to the boy, claiming she bore the least responsibility for his death.
Detectives indicated that the third suspect, Kirby Rankin, aged 33, confessed to the abuse and named Keeney and Evans as active participants.
The biological father of the victim also gave his testimony, expressing his anguish: “Willie was my whole world. I trusted you to care for him. They kept him from me for months based on falsehoods.”
Interestingly, different media outlets have referred to the suspects interchangeably as men and women, raising questions about their gender identity concerning the arrest records.
The bail for each suspect was set at $1.1 million, which includes a million for the murder charge. Each individual has pleaded not guilty and is expected to return to court later this month.
Authorities have been criticized for allegedly missing a chance to intervene earlier when Rankin had assaulted a woman in a parking lot, resulting in serious injuries for her. Despite this, he faced only minor charges.
