Thug attempts carjacking, winds up shot for his trouble; cops say victim is licensed to carry

A 20-year-old man was shot and killed during a gunfight during an attempted carjacking in the Philadelphia area late last week, police said.

“They tried to stop the car, but the car wouldn’t stop, so they chased the car trying to stop it,” Bernhardt told police.

According to WPVI, the driver of the Kia soon lost control and crashed.

According to WPVI, the carjacking suspect, a 20-year-old man from Colwyn, was taken to a hospital where he was listed in stable condition. The second driver, all 15 years old, is from Derby, the police department said, adding that police have captured the driver. A third person in the Kia fled the scene, according to WPVI.

Additionally, the department announced that the Kia that crashed was reported as stolen. Blaze News reported that there has been a recent increase in thefts of Kia and Hyundai vehicles.

“Kias and Hyundais are stolen all day, every day,” Bernhardt told WPVI.

Police said the victim in the skid was a 38-year-old Upper Darby man, and police do not yet know if he fired a gun, hitting the would-be carjacker, but he does have a license to carry the vehicle. said.

WPVI said Upper Darby police are working with the District Attorney’s Office to determine charges in the case.
