Thunder on the Brink of Finals After Game 5 Victory

The Oklahoma City Thunder are just one win away from reaching the NBA Finals for the second consecutive year. On Tuesday night, the Western Conference finals returned to Oklahoma City, and the Thunder delivered a strong performance in the second half to secure a 127-114 victory in Game 5.

Leading the charge for the Thunder was Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who scored 32 points and dished out nine assists. His efforts were essential in keeping the momentum on Oklahoma City’s side.

On the other hand, the San Antonio Spurs had their standout player in Stephon Castle, who contributed 24 points and five rebounds. However, Victor Wembanyama, who had previously been a significant force in the series, ended the night with a series-low of 20 points, struggling to find his rhythm.

Throughout the series, the Spurs had shown that their success relied heavily on Wembanyama’s performance. When he excelled, they won, but without that edge, things became challenging. In Game 5, he shot just 4-of-15 from the field and missed all five of his attempts from beyond the arc.

During a crucial timeout early in the third quarter—when the Thunder had built an 18-point lead—Wembanyama gave a passionate speech to his teammates. It seemed to spark some life; although the Thunder quickly extended their lead to 20, the Spurs managed to claw back, narrowing the deficit to eight points before the quarter finished.

Meanwhile, the New York Knicks are anxiously waiting to see which team will advance from the Western Conference, with the outcome still undecided.

Even prior to the conclusion of Game 5, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson was questioned about the Knicks fans in Manhattan chanting for Wembanyama. He acknowledged the excitement surrounding New York, saying, “I know New York is on fire. They had a great run in the playoffs.” Yet, he remained focused on his team’s current challenges.
