Thune claims Democrats received ‘nothing’ in DHS agreement as shutdown continues

Senate Republicans Reject Democratic DHS Reforms

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is still at a standstill, and Senate Republicans claim that Democrats have made no progress toward reform. According to them, there are “zero” reforms included in the latest funding negotiations.

Democrats, on the other hand, are framing the situation as a win, viewing it as a notable success in their ongoing campaign to reform Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). They accuse their Republican counterparts of yielding to their demands.

The Senate’s funding deal for DHS does allocate considerable resources for ICE and CBP, but it falls short of the structural changes that Democrats have been advocating for over the last 48 days.

Senate Passes DHS Funding Bill Amid Criticism

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a Republican, stated that the Republican Party has not backed down. He responded to inquiries about potential concessions, affirming, “No, we haven’t.” Thune emphasized that Democrats had aimed to impose restrictions on ICE and CBP, but ultimately got none of the reforms they sought.

Thune’s remarks came as he addressed comments from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who contended that “House Republicans have caved” by retracting their request for a 60-day funding extension for DHS.

Contentions Emerge Over Bipartisan Agreement

Schumer said that rifts within the Republican Party have hindered bipartisan cooperation, asserting that Democrats are focused on funding essential national security measures while refusing to provide unchecked funding to ICE and Border Patrol. He proclaimed, “We came together, held the line, and refused to let Republican chaos win.”

In response, Thune suggested that the situation was more about Democrats not prioritizing funding than about any actual negotiations.

House Republicans Looking to Re-Approach DHS Funding

Despite the ongoing shutdown, some House Republicans are pushing ahead with new plans for DHS funding. Thune noted that funding had already been allocated last summer, so ICE and CBP will remain funded through the end of the fiscal year. He mentioned plans to bolster those funds in the future.

Currently, Republicans are concentrating on a budget reconciliation process to secure immediate funding for immigration enforcement, a move that has President Donald Trump’s backing. This approach, however, will require solid support from Senate Republicans.

Trump recently commended Republicans for their teamwork in reopening a significant portion of DHS, noting he plans to sign an executive order to compensate “all of the outstanding employees of the Department of Homeland Security,” which is especially important since current funding proposals do not support immigration enforcement staff.

“Republicans are united and moving forward with a plan to refund our incredible Border Patrol and immigration enforcement agents,” Trump said on Truth Social.

The shutdown remains in effect, and the upcoming revisions to the funding plan will initiate another round of voting in the House. However, many hardline Republicans are expected to resist, and the House is not projected to reconvene until April 13.
