Senate Standoff Over Funding Extension Heightens Risk of Government Shutdown

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a Republican from South Dakota, has voiced opposition to Senate Democrats’ efforts to block the GOP’s temporary funding extension as Congress gets closer to a potential government shutdown.

Democrats, under the leadership of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, voted against a second continuing resolution (CR) just hours ahead of the deadline to maintain government funding. This back-and-forth has many questioning whether a deal can be struck during the upcoming fiscal year.

Thune remarked that he has the votes to push for the same bill again, suggesting he’d be open to discussions if Schumer is willing. He also noted that some Democrats are disgruntled with the current situation.

Shutdown Fears Grow Following Democrats’ Rejection of Funding Extension

“We didn’t ask for new Republican policies or add any partisan elements,” Thune stated. “We simply requested that Democrats agree to continue existing funding levels so the Senate could proceed with bipartisan spending.” He criticized Senate Democrats for prioritizing the demands of far-left factions over the needs of the American public.

The GOP’s latest attempt to advance the CR aims to extend government funding until November 21, granting lawmakers additional time to pass crucial spending bills, a task that has been elusive for decades.

Despite the looming shutdown threat, Thune and other Senate Republicans took note of a more constructive outcome from the failed votes, as more Democrats crossed party lines compared to previous attempts.

Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso pointed out that there has been noticeable movement among Democrats, with three Democrats choosing to support the funding bill this time, compared to just one in an earlier vote.

GOP Blames Democrats for Creating Shutdown Fears over Healthcare Issues

Schumer, on the other hand, dismissed any notion of compromise, accusing the GOP and President Trump of positioning the country toward a shutdown while disregarding bipartisan negotiations.

Senate Democrats have also been advocating for the expiration of tax credits related to Obamacare, arguing that such issues shouldn’t be part of short-term funding discussions.

Nonetheless, Schumer urged Thune and his GOP colleagues to engage in negotiations to develop a bipartisan continuing resolution. “If they don’t cooperate, it’ll be the Republicans who are blamed when the federal government comes to a standstill,” he said, signaling that the pressure is on them to find a resolution.
