Teanna Davidson Prepares for NWSL Championship from the Sidelines
SAN JOSE, Calif. — Teanna Davidson, a defenseman for Gotham FC, felt a sense of “comfort” leading into the NWSL Championship match on Saturday.
Returning to the Bay Area, where her soccer journey began, has offered her a rare warmth while she recovers from a torn ACL in her left knee. During this time, she reconnected with family and friends, even acting as a guide for local dining spots and coffee shops.
This familiar environment has served as a welcome distraction from her current challenges.
As Gotham FC geared up to play against the Washington Spirit for the championship title, Davidson found herself watching from the sidelines, just seven months post-surgery.
She tries to stay positive about her situation. Although she can’t play, she’s discovered other ways to support her team.
Yet, it’s hard to ignore the longing to be on the field. “I really hope I can contribute because that’s the clearest way to support my team,” Davidson remarked. “It’s definitely tough when you’re in a playoff tournament, and I want to be there for the girls on the field.”
Since joining Gotham FC before the 2024 season, Davidson has been a key defensive player. Unfortunately, her knee injury came during a match in early April.
As a member of the U.S. Women’s National Team, she was well aware of the lengthy recovery process after suffering a similar injury to her other knee in 2022.
“Now that I’m more familiar with this journey, it feels a bit easier,” she shared. “It’s less daunting. Certain things you just forget until they happen again, and then you realize, ‘Oh, I actually blocked that memory out.’ But generally, it’s about learning to recognize the aches and challenges along the way. I feel more at ease with this process now.”
Gotham FC remains committed to Davidson’s future, having extended her contract in July through the 2027 season. This move keeps the team’s competitive hopes alive. Other key players contracted for next season include Esther Gonzalez, Jadyn Shaw, Rose LaBelle, and Emily Sonnette.
With a bright future ahead, Davidson is optimistic about Gotham’s chances of returning to the championship. Although it may not be at a local venue every time, she’s confident there will be future opportunities to pursue more trophies.
Her contract gives her reassurance that her road to recovery won’t be straightforward.
“Coming back after a long injury definitely takes time to get back to your best self,” Davidson said. “When things don’t go perfectly, having great teammates is reassuring. They’ll have your back, which eases those nerves about returning to play. Plus, it’s wonderful to be part of a group that values our collective future.”
On Saturday, Davidson intended to cherish the atmosphere around her.
The support from those close to her was overwhelming. Requests for tickets flooded in from friends, family, and acquaintances.
Her family organized an extensive tailgate party with Batman flags at PayPal Stadium, where Gotham faced Washington.
“I grew up experiencing the Bay’s passion for soccer, particularly women’s soccer,” Davidson said Saturday. “Having a championship here is special. This place means a lot to women’s soccer, and I’m thrilled to be a part of hosting the first NWSL championship here.”
