’80s Icon Tiffany Makes a Return to Theatre

Tiffany, well-known for her pop hits in the ’80s, is stepping back into the spotlight, bringing to life a dream that she had set aside during her rise to fame.

The 54-year-old singer, who shot to stardom in 1987 with her smash hit “I Think We’re Alone Now,” made her Off-Broadway debut last week in “Spandex the Musical.”

In a July conversation with People magazine, Tiffany described the experience of taking the stage as a “true full-circle moment.” It seems that before her music career kicked off, she aspired to be a dancer and an actress, but those dreams, as she mentioned, were sidelined when her recording career began.

“Before music came into my life, I was a dancer and an actor,” she said. “Those dreams were put on hold when ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’ took off.”

For those who might not recall, Tiffany, whose full name is Tiffany Darwish, initially made waves in the music industry through her Shopping Mall Tour ’87, where she performed free concerts at various malls across the United States. This grassroots approach, starting in June 1987, catapulted her into teen idol status.

Her cover of the classic song “I Think We’re Alone Now” released in September 1987 quickly soared to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, establishing her as a household name.

The track was actually the second single from her self-titled debut album, which also featured the hit “Could’ve Been.” Her album even included a cover of a Beatles song, “I Saw Him Standing There,” which peaked at No. 7. Incredible, right? It’s interesting how her success unfolded from such humble beginnings.

At just 16 years old, Tiffany became the youngest female artist to debut with a top album on the Billboard 200, and by 1988, she embarked on her first major tour. Interestingly, New Kids on the Block opened for her during that tour, although they would soon become a sensation of their own.

However, sustaining that chart-topping success was quite the challenge. Her follow-up album, “Hold an Old Friend’s Hand,” went platinum but didn’t replicate the overwhelming success of the first. By the early ’90s, the changing landscape of pop music proved difficult for her third album, “New Inside,” to catch on.

Tiffany’s fourth album, “Dreams Never Die,” released in 1993, was aimed solely at the Asian market. After that, she stepped back from the spotlight to focus on raising her son Elijah, whom she shares with her ex-husband, Bulmaro Garcia.

In the early 2000s, Tiffany moved to Nashville, leaving Hollywood behind. Reflecting on that decision, she shared, “I came to Nashville for the first time when I was 10… I’ve been coming back ever since. I love being out in the country – I’m a country girl at heart.” It appears that she found a sense of peace in that simpler life.

Since her teen idol days, Tiffany has continued to tour and release music independently. She’s also dabbled in film and television appearances, as well as reality shows. Recently, she has been working on a culinary brand that merges her love for cooking with fan engagement through her platform, “Let’s Food With Tiffany.” It seems quite fulfilling, really.

Earlier this year, Tiffany released her second cookbook, “POP LIFE: The Ultimate ‘80s Kitchen Encore,” in collaboration with Las Vegas celebrity chef Alicia Shevetone. It’s curious how she manages to blend her pop culture roots with culinary adventures.

Now, in July, Tiffany shared her excitement about her role in “Spandex the Musical,” where she plays a character named Linda Gustafson, a housewife navigating the world of aerobics competitions in the fictional 1988 Crystal Light National Aerobics Championship.

“I’ve always believed the right role would find me,” she expressed, reflecting on how reading the script made her feel an immediate connection. “Just as Linda discovers a new passion through aerobics that changes her life, I’ve found exciting new passions beyond music through my ‘Pop Life’ cookbook… and now returning to acting on stage.” She’s got a point; reinvention is indeed a powerful concept.

This limited Off-Broadway engagement runs for just ten days until September 27. After each performance, Tiffany will perform her famous “I Think We’re Alone Now” during the curtain call, an apparent nod to her roots.

In her words, there are enchanting parallels between Linda’s journey and her own. “I’m thrilled the producers have woven in some fun Tiffany Easter eggs that I know longtime fans are going to love,” she mentioned, hinting at delightful surprises for her audience.

What’s particularly touching is that a portion of the show’s proceeds will support Children’s Miracle Network, a charity dedicated to helping children in need across the United States and Canada. Tiffany articulated her pride in being part of such a meaningful project, stating, “Giving back has always been close to my heart.” It truly adds depth to her return to the stage.

With excitement, she concluded, “I can’t wait for audiences to experience the laughs, the music, the ‘80s nostalgia and, of course, plenty of spandex!”
