Tiffany Burress Announces Candidacy for State House Seat

Tiffany Burress, the spouse of former New York Giants player Plaxico Burress, revealed on Tuesday that she will be running as a Republican for a state House seat in North Jersey that has traditionally been held by Democrats.

In her announcement, Burress differentiated her professional background in the private sector from the long public service career of her opponent, Nellie Pou. Interestingly, Plaxico Burress is well-remembered for making the winning touchdown in Super Bowl XLII, which prevented the New England Patriots from completing their undefeated season in 2008. Throughout his tenure with the Giants, he accumulated 4,086 receiving yards.

Hailing from Pittsburgh, Burress is known for her role on the Workers’ Compensation Committee of the New Jersey State Bar Association and has been recognized among Bergen County’s “Top Lawyers.” She also has a history as a collegiate athlete at Penn State University.

In her statement, Burress criticized Pou, who took over the seat from the late Bill Pascrell Jr., emphasizing the numerous “doors” that had opened for her opponent throughout her career. Burress mentioned that while Pou had various offers in government since 1997, she herself had to “blast down the door” to achieve her goals. Her stance is that Democrats often shy away from confrontation, while she is committed to voicing opposition, even within her own party.

“Let’s try something new,” Burress stated from Totowa.

Burress’s candidacy could add an interesting dynamic to the political landscape in New Jersey. The district, which includes the MetLife Giants stadium complex in East Rutherford, has not seen a Republican representative since U.S. Rep. Harold Hollenbeck, who was in office until 1981. Since then, the area has seen several noteworthy Democrats, including Robert Torricelli and Bill Pascrell.

The district itself is quite diverse, stretching from Pompton Lakes along Interstate 287 and encompasses the Democratic-leaning city of Paterson, among other suburban areas in South Bergen County. Previously, Pou was expected to win against Republican challenger Billy Prempeh with ease, but her victory margin was close—a mere four points—indicating a shift in voter sentiment, particularly due to Donald Trump’s influence in the area.

Interestingly, this shift has raised questions about how other local demographics might react to Republican candidates, especially given the tension related to various political issues in recent years.

Union communications suggest that the dynamics in the district are heating up as the next elections draw closer, with many expecting a competitive race ahead.
