Tiger Woods makes 24th consecutive Masters cut to set record

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Tiger Woods broke another record at Augusta National.

Woods, 48, made his 24th shot on Friday, breaking the record for most consecutive cuts at the Masters.

He is 1 over par and still in contention to win a record sixth green jacket.

That means I have a chance to play this weekend,” Woods said. “I’m here. I have a chance to win the golf tournament. I finished two rounds. I just need some food and some caffeine and I’m good to go.”

Woods had to finish the final five holes of the first round on Friday morning because play was suspended on Thursday due to weather and darkness.

He finished the first round with a 1-over-par 73 and shot even par in the second round.

His 24 consecutive cuts surpassed the record shared by close friends Fred Couples, who had a streak from 1993 to 2007, and Gary Player, who had a streak from 1959 to 1982.

“As soon as I’m done with you guys, [reporters]you could text Freddie and give him a little needle,” Woods joked.

Asked to assess his position going into the weekend, Woods, who last won the Masters in 2019, said: I’ll be right there.I’m only 8 years old [shots] For now, he’s back (leader Bryson DeChambeau was still on the course at 7 under at the end of the round).

“I don’t think anyone is running or hiding right now, but it’s really crowded. The way the ball moves on the green, the way the chip shot goes, that’s all you want on a golf course today.”

Woods had to withdraw from the 2023 Masters Saturday morning due to poor health and cold, wet weather.

In the past two years, he has completed only one full-field 72-hole tournament.

“Yeah, I’m tired,” he said. “I’ve been going out for a while, competing, working hard. 23 holes, long day. But… I fought really well today and I have a chance.”

Asked before the tournament how proud he was of his cutting streak, Woods said, “It’s the consistency, it’s the longevity, it’s the understanding of how to play this golf course.” That’s one of the reasons players in their 50s and 60s underperform here, and why players in their late 40s try to win just by understanding how to play this event. ”
