Tiger Woods misses the cut at British Open for third straight time at a major this year

For just the second time in his career, Tiger Woods has missed the cut in three consecutive major tournaments.

The 15-time major championship winner shot 77 on Friday at Royal Troon to finish the first two days at 14-over par.

The 48-year-old Woods managed just one birdie in Friday’s round and a double bogey on the second hole erased any chance of qualifying.

Woods played in all four Grand Slam tournaments this season for the first time since 2019. He made the cut at the Masters but set a record by missing the weekend at Augusta for the 24th consecutive time.

The next time fans will see Woods on a golf course will be in December at the unofficial Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas, followed by the PNC Championship, where he will compete with his son Charlie.

Earlier this week Colin Montgomerie suggested Woods should retire following his performance at the U.S. Open, but the legendary player has no plans to retire just yet.

“I’ll play as long as I can play and I still feel like I can win this tournament.”

Woods, an 82-time PGA Tour winner, played in three majors in 2022 but just one in 2023. Questions have dogged his health since a car accident that nearly cost him his right leg in February 2021, but Woods maintains he is in good health.

“I would have liked to play more but I wanted to see if I could play in the majors this year. I took a lot of time off to recover, like I have all year,” Woods said. The Washington Post.

“I’m improving, even though it’s not showing in the results. But physically I’m improving, which is great. So I just need to keep on improving and eventually play more competitively and get back in the flow of competing.”
