Tiger Woods is stepping away from golf to “seek medical treatment” following his arrest for drunk driving after a rollover accident in Jupiter Island, Florida, on Friday. In a statement shared on social media, Woods acknowledged the gravity of his situation.
“I recognize and understand how serious this is,” he said. “I’ll be taking some time off to focus on my health and pursue treatment. It’s important to prioritize my well-being and work on a sustainable recovery.” He also expressed his commitment to using this time for personal and professional growth, thanking those who have supported him and requesting privacy for himself and his loved ones.
After pleading not guilty on Tuesday, Woods later withdrew his plea and requested a jury trial. His attorney, Douglas N. Duncan, didn’t respond immediately to inquiries from news sources.
Woods was arrested after officials found prescription opioids in his possession after the crash. The 15-time major champion faces charges of DUI causing property damage and failure to submit to a blood alcohol level (BAL) test. Law enforcement noted several signs indicating impairment, including profuse sweating, lethargy, and bloodshot eyes.
Woods admitted to being distracted at the time of the accident, noting he was focused on his phone and adjusting the radio when he failed to notice the vehicle ahead slowing down.
Authorities also discovered two hydrocodone pills in his pocket. Although Woods was tested for alcohol with a breathalyzer showing a 0.00 result, he refused to undergo a urine test, leading to additional charges.
This incident marks Woods’ second DUI-related arrest in a decade. In a previous incident in 2017 on Jupiter Island, he was caught asleep at the wheel after taking prescription medications. Notably, Woods sustained serious leg injuries in a rollover accident in 2021 that necessitated emergency surgery, an event he referenced during a sobriety test.
Woods had recently returned to golf after surgery to address a torn Achilles tendon and back issues, aiming to prepare for the Masters Tournament. His current statement, however, indicates he will not be participating this year. There are plans for him to play in the U.S. Senior Open, according to teammate Kevin Kisner.
