Tiger Woods, PGA Tour Policy Board members meet LIV Golf, Saudi PIF boss

A high-stakes meeting was held in the Bahamas on Monday.

Tiger Woods, along with PGA Tour Policy Committee members and PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, met directly with Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) President Yasir Al Rumayyan for the first time.

Initial reports said the introductory meeting would be held in Ponta Vedra Beach, Florida, where The Players Championship concluded on Sunday. However, more than just flight tracking data. Other reports Comments from Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis and Ryan Ravner suggested the rally took place “off shore.”

Regardless of location, the conversations held are kept “close to the vest,” Lewis said. This aligns with Monaghan’s statement at The Players, as the commissioner indicated that these negotiations would not take place in front of the public.

Nevertheless, Monday’s meeting acted as an “ice breaker” for the sporting world and helped the player director clear the names of a number of PIF representatives.

Monaghan confirmed this in a letter to players on Monday night. Originally posted on X by Ryan French of Monday Q:

“The conversations throughout have been constructive and represent an important part of the due diligence process when selecting potential investors for PGA Tour Enterprises. This follows an investment from Strategic Sports Group earlier this year. It reflects the approach we took when evaluating offers.

During the session, [al-Rumayyan] We had the opportunity to introduce ourselves to our player director and talk about his vision, priorities and motivations for investing in professional golf.

“As we continue our discussions with PIF, we will keep you as updated as possible, but please understand that we need to maintain our position of not negotiating publicly. I will refrain from making any further comments.”

Jordan Spieth, Patrick Cantlay, Adam Scott, Webb Simpson and Peter Malnati currently serve as other player directors alongside Woods, and all were in attendance Monday.

Talks between the two sides will continue, but as Monaghan emphasized at TPC Sawgrass on March 12, the golf community must be patient as negotiations progress.

Still, Mr. Lewis reported that the upcoming meeting will focus on three main points. First, what would PIF’s investment in the for-profit PGA Tour Enterprises look like? Second, how does team golf fit into the sport as a whole? And third, and perhaps most important to golf fans, how will LIV Golf players return to the PGA Tour?
