Embattled Embiid Faces Barbs from Tiki Barber
Tiki Barber has had enough of Joel Embiid’s complaints.
The former New York Giants running back, now a radio host on WFAN, took aim at the Philadelphia 76ers star this week after Embiid grumbled about the physical play he faced during a playoff series against the New York Knicks.
This all kicked off after the Knicks trounced the Sixers 137-98 in Game 1. During that game, Mikal Bridges collided with Embiid, hitting his midsection—a particularly unfortunate moment since Embiid had just suffered an emergency appendectomy.
After the game, Embiid commented on the incident.
“I’m not sure if it was a dirty play… It probably didn’t need to happen,” Embiid said. “But, hey, it’s playoff basketball. If that’s how it goes, then we’ve got to remain physical.”
He also acknowledged that he might need to step up his defensive game while still recovering from his surgery. “We’ve got to learn to protect ourselves better,” he mentioned.
However, Barber wasn’t feeling empathetic. On his show, “Evan & Tiki,” Barber criticized Embiid for voicing his grievances about the physicality of the game.
“If you’re going to get hurt—whether it’s a legitimate hit or an accidental one—maybe you shouldn’t be playing,” Barber asserted. “When I broke my arm in 2000, I had to tape up the other arm because everyone knew about the break. They were stepping on it, but I didn’t whine about it. That’s part of the risk when you play injured. So just stop complaining.”
Barber continued, emphasizing that being an elite athlete means pushing through injuries. “You’ve been at this for a while; playing hurt is a part of the game, especially when it really matters.”
As the playoffs continue, it seems that Embiid might not receive much sympathy from the public. His history of inconsistent performances and dramatics has likely colored fans’ perceptions. And, of course, the atmosphere at Madison Square Garden? That won’t be forgiving either.
