Tiki Barber doesn’t want to be part of J.J. McCarthy’s No. 6 pick, which belongs to the Giants.
“I’m not awake. I’m just saying. I’m not awake,” Barber said Thursday.. “I don’t want him. It’s not happening.”
The Giants are one of the more interesting teams in the 2024 NFL Draft, as they could go in a number of directions, including drafting a quarterback to replace Daniel Jones.
The consensus seems to be that the Giants will miss out on their first three quarterbacks, with the Bears drafting Caleb Williams at No. 1, the Commanders and Patriots selecting No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, and possibly Drake Maye. It looks like Jaden Daniels will be the pick. In no particular order.
The same quarterback-needy teams like the Vikings (No. 11) and Broncos (No. 12) could draft McCarthy before or in the Giants’ slot.
So if the Giants don’t get a chance to take, they could draft a receiver like Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr., LSU’s Malik Nabors or Washington’s Roma Odunze. 4th QB drafted.
McCarthy could be that fourth quarterback, but he would have to go further up the ladder, but there seems to be some debate about that ceiling.
He didn’t put up gaudy numbers when playing for Jim Harbaugh at the University of Michigan, but some scouting reports indicate they expect him to be better at the professional level. .
McCarthy threw for 2,291 yards and 22 touchdowns last year, but failed to surpass 225 passing yards in any of his last six games.
Mr. Harbaugh vouched for Mr. McCarthy, but Mr. Barber did not acknowledge it.
“I’m tired of hearing about JJ McCarthy. Stop talking about JJ McCarthy,” Barber said. “His film doesn’t say he’s a first-round quarterback. His film doesn’t say, ‘We need to get rid of all our assets and draft this guy.’ Is not … Because a lot of what he does is incomprehensible. The plan he ran at the University of Michigan — and maybe this is an indictment on the plan, not necessarily against him — but it’s about what you have to do, the second, third level reads, you have to do. I didn’t emphasize multiple combo routes. It has to be right. He did nothing of the sort. He thrived there because they were run-based and he was good at them. That’s what Jim Harbaugh wanted him to do.
“To me, the JJ McCarthy thing is like a smokescreen. He’s overhyped because Jim Harbaugh won’t stop talking about him. Now all of a sudden he’s a top-four quarterback. Did you buy it? I won’t buy it.”
In an interesting wrinkle, McCarthy’s Over/under draft slot At 5.5 on DraftKings, he’s right in the position where the Giants can pick him.
