Senate Republicans React to Grand Jury’s Decision
Several Senate Republicans, known for occasionally diverging from the Trump administration, have expressed support for the grand jury’s recent choice not to indict multiple Democratic lawmakers. These lawmakers had urged military personnel to refuse what they described as “unlawful orders.”
Senator Thom Tillis from North Carolina applauded the Washington, D.C., grand jury for dismissing indictments against six Democratic Congress members who had asked service members to reject orders seen as illegal under the previous administration. In a post on X, Tillis stated, “Political legal actions by both sides undermine America’s criminal justice system, which is the highest standard in the world. Thankfully, in this case, the jury saw the attempted indictment for what it was. Such actions are not normal, cannot be tolerated, and must stop.”
Grand Jury Rejects Indictments
This isn’t the first instance where Tillis has opposed government initiatives. He has previously indicated intentions to block future Homeland Security nominees, challenge President Trump’s selection for Federal Reserve Chair, and voiced criticism of Trump’s advisors, particularly Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller.
In a related note, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, serving as the top federal prosecutor in D.C., was pursuing criminal charges against Senators Elissa Slotkin and Mark Kelly, along with Representatives Maggie Goodlander, Jason Crow, and Chris Delzio of Pennsylvania.
A group of Democratic lawmakers, who’ve served in the military or intelligence, asserted last year that service members aren’t bound to follow orders they consider unconstitutional, emphasizing that they must refuse illegal directives.
Democratic Senators Under Scrutiny
The Uniform Code of Military Justice mandates that military members obey lawful orders but allows them to reject those they perceive as illegal. This assertion led Trump to criticize the lawmakers, labeling their actions as deserving of “the death penalty” in a post on Truth Social.
After the grand jury’s refusal to indict, lawmakers publicly supported the decision. Mark Kelly remarked, “Donald Trump wants to make sure all Americans are too scared to speak out against him. The most patriotic thing we can do is not back down.” Slotkin added that regardless of any forthcoming legal actions, this moment represents a victory for the Constitution, free speech, and the rule of law.
As of now, there has been no comment from Pirro’s office concerning this matter.
