Tim Allen Shares How Erika Kirk's Words Helped Him Forgive His Father's Killer

A powerful moment of forgiveness at Erica Kirk’s husband’s funeral has resonated across the nation, connecting to a well-known figure in Hollywood.

Actor and comedian Tim Allen expressed his deep impression from Kirk’s remarks during the service.

“When Erica Kirk talked about the man who killed her husband, saying, ‘I’ll forgive him,’ it struck a chord with me,” Allen wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

“For over 60 years, I’ve battled with forgiving the person who took my father’s life,” he added. “So now, I’m saying: ‘I forgive the man who killed my father.’ That’s important.”

Allen’s father, Gerald Dick, died in 1964 due to a drunk driver when Allen was just 11.

The post quickly gained traction, amassing 280,000 likes, 29,000 retweets, and over 8 million views, kicking off a broader conversation online about Christianity and the meaning of forgiveness, with around 11,000 comments pouring in.

One commenter noted, “I’ve always struggled with the part about loving my enemies.”

Another person reflected, “[Jesus] asks us to be forgiven, so how can I not do the same for others?”

Others pointed out that forgiving doesn’t mean overlooking wrongdoings; instead, it embodies the merciful nature of Christ, trusting Him to administer true justice.

“Mercy and justice aren’t the same,” one fan mentioned. “We need mercy, but we also have to enact justice through Christ.”

Some fans shared how Allen’s words encouraged them to confront their own past grievances. One expressed, “I’ve wrestled with forgiving the man who killed my grandmother for 42 years. I’m saying this with tears in my eyes: ‘I will forgive him.’ It brings me peace.”

Tim Allen is famously known for his roles in Home Improvement, the Toy Story franchise, and Last Man Standing.

Erica Kirk’s message of forgiveness was the cornerstone of the five-hour memorial held at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

She shared, “My husband Charlie wanted to help young men like the one who took his life. On the cross, our Savior said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they’re doing.'”

“That man— that young man— I forgive him. That’s what Christ did, and that’s what Charlie would have wanted. The antidote to hatred is love, as we’ve learned from the gospel.”

Recently, Tim Allen mentioned on social media that he has been exploring the Bible, reading it cover to cover for the first time. He wrote in June, “I’ve completed the Old Testament. It’s a true gift when the meaning unfolds, and I’m now delving into Paul’s letters.”
