Political Assassination Allegations in Minnesota
Vance Belter, who is facing accusations of a political assassination in Minnesota last June, claimed in a handwritten letter that Democratic Governor Tim Waltz had solicited him to murder two U.S. senators.
Belter is linked to an incident that resulted in the deaths of Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, along with serious injuries to Senator John Hoffman and his spouse.
A letter sent to FBI Director Kash Patel from Belter’s abandoned vehicle alleged that Walz recruited him to take out Democratic Senators Tina Smith and Amy Klobuchar. The full text of the letter has been made available by the Minnesota Star Tribune.
“By the time you read this, I might very well be dead,” Belter reportedly wrote. “I thought you might find this information interesting… Tim wanted me to kill Amy Klobuchar and Tina. Tim aspires to be a senator and he has come to distrust her. He expects her to retire and leave the race at the last minute.”
Belter expressed that he refused to comply with this alleged plot and aimed to expose the governor instead.
“Tim is probably fuming right now because I’m still around and I know what he can do,” he mentioned. “I’m aware of all the buried skeletons, so I could easily end up shot,” he continued.
In his letter, Belter claimed to have received military training and traveled extensively, including to Eastern Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Africa.
Attorney Joseph Thompson confirmed in a press conference that authorities had retrieved both firearms used in the original attack and that Belter was apprehended following a two-day manhunt. It was also stated that he “shot at and attempted to harm Hoffman’s daughter” during the incident, with Thompson emphasizing the bravery of John and Yvette Hoffman in putting themselves in danger to protect their child. Thankfully, they hope that the daughter was not harmed.
Belter’s letter also noted that despite having multiple chances, he had refrained from firing at law enforcement, asserting, “You should realize I didn’t shoot at the officer or the juvenile.”
As a closing plea for his family’s safety, he wrote, “I just want to keep my family safe. They are innocent and have nothing to do with this. This was a solo operation.”
The FBI has yet to issue a response to inquiries about the case.
