Tim Walz Advises Anti-ICE Protesters Against Rioting—But Not for the Reason You Might Assume

Governor Walz Responds to ICE Incident in Minnesota

Minnesota’s Democratic Governor, Tim Walz, suggested on Wednesday that the Trump administration was encouraging unrest against immigration enforcement, while urging residents to stay calm.

This reaction comes after a woman was shot and killed during an enforcement operation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), sparking outrage from Walz and Minneapolis Democratic Mayor Jacob Frey. Walz emphasized the importance of peaceful protests, saying, “If you want to demonstrate, do it peacefully.”

“It’s evident that Donald Trump and his administration may not have much regard for Minnesota, but we care deeply about our state,” Walz stated. “We won’t allow them to divide us.”

“To Minnesotans, I want to say: I understand your anger; I share it,” he continued. “They want to create a spectacle, but we must resist that urge. Express your First Amendment rights, but do it peacefully. We can’t give them what they desire.”

According to reports, the ICE officer involved in the shooting had previously been dragged by a vehicle during an incident in June.

The situation intensified after President Trump announced plans to end Temporary Protected Status for Somalis in Minneapolis, sparked by allegations of welfare fraud. This decision led to a significant federal presence in the Minneapolis area, with officials estimating the total impact could exceed $9 billion.

Resistance to ICE’s efforts has occasionally escalated into violence. In states like Illinois and California, there have been incidents where ICE officers were reportedly shot at during operations. Additionally, in Chicago, a document from the Department of Homeland Security detailed attacks involving multiple armed vehicles targeting ICE personnel.

In Portland, Oregon, there were violent clashes where protesters targeted conservative journalists, aiming to disrupt federal law enforcement operations with equipment like lasers against aircraft.

A shooting at an ICE office in Dallas on September 24 resulted in two fatalities, with the assailant taking their own life. Moreover, a separate incident in Alvarado, Texas saw ten individuals charged with attempted murder related to an earlier ICE operation.
