Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, the Democratic vice presidential candidate, has advocated for using algae to power the U.S. Navy.As part of his climate change efforts, President Trump has argued that sustainable energy solutions are critical to the resilience of the military.
During a 2016 debate in Winona, Minnesota, against then-candidate Republican Jim Hagedorn, Walz said there was growing recognition that climate change is an urgent issue that cannot be ignored.
While Walz noted that the nation's military could adopt new, more environmentally friendly resources, he insisted that “the Department of Defense is not a bunch of environmentalists.”
According to Waltz, the Department of Defense views climate change as a significant risk that affects not only the environment but also national security.
“The Department of Defense understands that this is a climate and environmental risk and a national security issue,” he asserted. “They're creating a 'Great Green Fleet' that will use algae to power the Navy.”
Walz has consistently supported radical climate change measures, pushing for policies such as building a carbon-free electricity grid by 2040.
“We can't be in too much of a hurry when it comes to tackling climate change.”

While he advocates for clean energy solutions such as algae-based fuel for the military, he has drawn criticism for prioritizing long-term environmental goals over immediate threats to national security and immediate energy needs, with critics warning the policy will lead to higher energy infrastructure costs and reliability concerns.
“Think Tim Walz is a moderate? Think again.” Written Responding to his remarks, Daniel Turner, executive director of Power the Future, said:
Mark Morano, Founder of Climate Depot Hit He described the Pentagon's focus on climate change under the Biden-Harris administration as being “hijacked by climate change mania” by military leadership and accused the military of prioritizing environmental virtue signaling over true military preparedness.
“The Pentagon is completely 'environmentalist-packed' under the Biden-Harris administration,” Morano said, rejecting Walz's assertion that climate change is a significant threat to national security.
The Biden-Harris administration has placed climate change at the center of its policy agenda, including within the Department of Defense (DOD), sparking significant backlash. 2022 Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin issued A climate directive requiring the Army to incorporate climate considerations into its strategic planning went into effect, resulting in a 50-page plan focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris said in a CNN interview on Thursday stated She said her “values have not changed” when it comes to climate policy.
“I have always believed that the climate crisis is real and I have been working on it. [and] “This is an urgent matter and criteria need to be applied, including meeting time-related deadlines,” she said.

She also acknowledged that the Inflation Beating Act is primarily a green energy spending bill, which experts say won't help fight inflation.
“We did that with the Inflation Control Act,” she said. “We set targets for the United States, and indeed the planet, of when we had to achieve certain baselines of greenhouse gas emission reductions, and those have not changed, for example.”
In early August, Sen. J.D. Vance (Ohio), the Republican vice presidential nominee, Explained Walz is the kind of man who “wants Americans to become more dependent on junk energy rather than on good American energy.”
