Minnesota Governor’s Controversial Child Care Remarks Resurface Amid Fraud Allegations

During a debate last year with vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz praised the state’s efforts to simplify entry into the child care industry. This comes as the Somali immigrant community is facing accusations of defrauding millions in child care assistance.

Walz emphasized the importance of accessibility, stating, “We need to make it easier for people to access it. It’s about driving business and helping people pay for it. We did that in Minnesota,” while advocating for a federal paid family and medical leave initiative.

The video of this discussion has gained significant attention, going viral after journalist Nick Shirley highlighted allegations of extensive fraud within the sector.

Records indicate that numerous child care facilities Walz highlighted had ceased operations, despite receiving substantial state funding in recent years. One center, notably misspelled on its sign, reportedly acquired $4 million in tax dollars while standing empty.

This footage led FBI Director Kash Patel to assert that the allegations represent the “tip of a very large iceberg,” threatening legal actions against convicted Somali fraudsters that may include denaturalization and deportation.

Walz faced immediate scrutiny as critics referenced his earlier comments during the debate.

Reactions to the resurfaced video included remarks like, “Yes, Tim, you have certainly made it easier for people to start a child care business. They don’t even have to provide child care to get paid.” Another viewer noted, “Tim Walz would have said the quiet parts out loud…if we knew then what we know now.”

The fraudulent scheme reportedly traces back to 2015, when a daycare was charged with overbilling Minnesota’s child care subsidy program. More recent accusations involve Medicaid-funded assistance programs tailored for seniors and individuals with disabilities, including housing support.

Federal authorities estimate that the potential scale of the fraud could reach $9 billion.

Walz previously commented on the fraud allegations during a press conference in November, before full details of the situation emerged. He remarked that such scandals “erode trust in government” and “undermine programs that are absolutely critical to improving the quality of life.”

In light of Shirley’s exposé, Walz’s spokesperson asserted that the governor has strengthened oversight measures, including commencing investigations into specific facilities—one of which has already been shuttered.
