Tim Walz starts his notable campaign for a third term as governor of Minnesota.

Governor Tim Walz Launches Campaign for Third Term

“It’s not over yet.” These words marked the launch of Governor Tim Walz’s bid for a third term as Minnesota’s governor, announced on Tuesday. As he steps into this campaign, Walz, who is also the 2024 Democratic vice presidential candidate, expressed optimism about the state’s progress in a social media post, stating, “We’ve made historic progress in the state, but we’re not finished.” There’s a sense of urgency here.

In a video announcing his candidacy, Walz took aim at President Trump, insisting he would “never stop protecting us from the chaos, corruption, and cruelty that comes out of Washington.” His frustration with the current state of affairs is palpable. “We’ve seen how we can help each other through difficult times,” he reflected. “It’s been a tough year, and I’m heartbroken and angry at the loss inflicted by gun violence.” He emphasized solidarity and the need to retain hope during such challenging times.

Shifting gears, the current political landscape shows a vulnerable Republican contender eyeing a re-election challenge for 2026. Meanwhile, Walz has faced some scorn from GOP members for previously comparing Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to the Gestapo, a claim that did not sit well. He faced backlash at a congressional hearing in June, yet he stood firm and refused to apologize.

I mean, these political exchanges can spiral quickly. But it’s interesting to see how Walz has navigated these waters. As a former high school teacher and football coach, he recently indicated he isn’t planning on vying for the White House in 2028—at least not if he’s focused on the governorship in 2026.

His time as Kamala Harris’s running mate last summer certainly put him in the national spotlight. He has had to address not just his policies as governor but also the fallout from events such as the protests that erupted following George Floyd’s murder in Minneapolis in 2020. And security concerns have shadowed his political journey, especially given his military background—though that has been under scrutiny as well.

It’s worth noting his election history: Walz first won the governorship in 2018 by an 11% margin and secured re-election in 2022 with an eight-point edge. Yet, the challenge ahead looms large. He’ll be aiming for a third consecutive term, something no Minnesota governor has achieved since the state transitioned to a four-year term limit six decades ago.

Among those vying for the Republican nomination include former business executive Kendall Quall and doctor and former state senator Scott Jensen, who battled Walz in the 2022 election. With the stakes as high as they are, this campaign is bound to be a rollercoaster.
