What a moment.
This Mother’s Day, some adventurous moms teamed up with their adult children to swap brunch and flowers for a tattoo experience at local tattoo studios.
From Red Hook Tattoo Parlor in Brooklyn to Igla Tattoo Studio in midtown Manhattan, these places offered unique designs to express their love through ink.
“You could…” Adam Corothy, a senior tattoo artist at Live By the Sword in Brooklyn, mentioned.
On Mother’s Day weekend, the shop had a deal: two tattoos for $50 or three for $130, which, let’s be honest, is a decent savings.
“It’s also about shared memories,” said Corothy, who proudly sports his own “mama” heart tattoo.
“I know this means something special for them. Let’s have fun!”
One popular design was a small heart featuring the word “mama,” and at least one duo got it on Friday.
“Happy Mother’s Day LOL for Us,” one recipient posted on social media.
Some kids even watched their mothers get tattooed, making it a bonding experience on this special day.
Matching tattoos for moms and their grown children have gained popularity, especially over the last decade, breaking down previous stigma, particularly after the pandemic.
“It’s not just that more moms are getting tattoos; many had them even before becoming parents,” the artist noted.
Corothy admitted the holiday special wasn’t purely sentimental.
As recession concerns loom, tattoo shops must adapt to remain competitive and offer deals to ink enthusiasts.
“Promotions are essential,” he said. “It helps make it more affordable.”
At a tattoo parlor in Williamsburg, artists Isabella Dizon and Carolina Mogoron said they are inking moms at least twice a week, even offering a 20% discount on Mother’s Day tattoos.
“I’ve seen a lot of moms recently celebrating their journey into motherhood with tattoos,” Mogoron said.
“Yesterday, a woman came in smiling, saying it was her first happy tattoo.”
At Igra Tattoo, 18-year-old Ella Ryglan got her second tattoo while visiting from Boston.
Orha Telek, a tattoo artist at the shop, mentioned that tattoos celebrating motherhood are among the most popular, from birth month flower “bouquets” to fingerprints of loved ones.
“For many, it’s important to have something permanent that connects them to family,” Zhukova added.
“It’s a memory of their lives,” she said. “Just like family, it’s always with you.”
