Volpe Struggles Amidst Yankees’ Tough Series

Anthony Volpe is currently in the midst of a slump, having gone 20 at-bats without a hit as of Friday. Yankees manager Aaron Boone noted that Volpe’s swing appears to be “off,” stating that timing and rhythm are crucial for making solid contact with pitches.

In a recent game, the Yankees fell 5-3 to the Orioles. Volpe had a challenging night, going 0-for-4 with four strikeouts, which continues a trend of not being able to replicate the success he had during the postseason last year. His performance in the early part of this season hasn’t been impressive either.

That’s particularly concerning, especially in light of how he performed last season. Yet, hitting coach James Rowson believes that Volpe isn’t too far off from where he was at the end of last year. He mentioned not having seen the “normal swing” consistently from Volpe, but there’s still time to find it again.

Volpe’s hitless streak has dropped his OPS to .710, which is the lowest it’s been since April. Aaron Judge offered some encouraging words, advising Volpe to keep pushing through, noting that he’s faced challenges before and that he has the support of his teammates.

An American League scout shared his observations, emphasizing that Volpe is hitting a lot of ground balls, which has been an issue throughout his career. While he showed impressive skills in the playoffs, it hasn’t translated into regularity this season.

Rowson remains hopeful, asserting that glimpses of Volpe’s potential exist. He can hit the ball well across the field, but consistency is key. As the Yankees face a demanding schedule with 16 consecutive games, Volpe may benefit from a brief break in the coming days to reset, though the ongoing struggles have added to the team’s offensive challenges.

In other news, Pablo Reyes opted for free agency rather than taking on a bench role with the Yankees. The 31-year-old had recorded a .468 OPS in 24 games this season, but could not find a clear opportunity within the roster.

Cody Bellinger, who performed well recently with six hits over three games, was absent from the lineup against a right-handed pitcher on Friday.

Meanwhile, Jasson Domínguez continues to impress, having gone 2-for-2 with a walk, extending his recent hitting streak. Overall, it’s been a mixed bag for the Yankees as they navigate through a challenging moment in their season.
