Tina Fey Praises Matt Damon’s Take on Brett Kavanaugh
Tina Fey recently commented on Matt Damon’s portrayal of Justice Brett Kavanaugh during a SNL sketch, which played off allegations from Christine Blasey Ford that put his Supreme Court nomination at risk.
Fey discussed Damon’s performance, reflecting on the show’s history. “As we approach the 250th anniversary of the United States, we’ve been engaging with current events for quite some time,” she noted.
She observed that “the relationship between the show and current events has become increasingly direct,” adding, “When they say something, we often respond in kind. It’s both thrilling and kind of frightening to realize that what you say can resonate with those in power.”
Fey highlighted Kavanaugh, as portrayed by Damon, as a standout political impersonation. “Damon’s performance was so spot-on that it eased some of the viewers’ frustrations during the hearings,” she remarked. “It only resonates if it’s done well.”
The initial week of Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing seemed typical. Although some Democratic senators made a scene, Kavanaugh appeared on course to become President Trump’s nominee. However, everything changed dramatically on September 16, 2018, when washington post reported allegations from psychology professor Christine Blasey Ford, claiming Kavanaugh attacked her at a high school party in the 1980s, with Mark Judge as a witness. Interestingly, Blasey Ford couldn’t pinpoint when the assault actually took place.
She recounted that Kavanaugh pinned her down, groping her and trying to remove her swimsuit before placing his hand over her mouth when she attempted to scream. “I thought he might accidentally kill me,” Ford stated, describing her experience. She escaped only when Judge jumped on top of them, allowing her to flee and lock herself in a bathroom momentarily.
Ford struggled to remember specifics about the party or how she got home that night. Notably, Leland Ingraham Kaiser, a childhood friend, said he didn’t recall attending that party or meeting Kavanaugh. Mark Judge also denied any such event and testified to the FBI that he never witnessed Kavanaugh harm anyone in high school.
Mark Judge later claimed in an interview that he faced witness tampering. “I received a threatening call from California on September 14, 2018. They tried to blackmail me, leaving a message that I shared with the FBI,” he said.
He added that Kaiser was warned that if he didn’t support Ford, damaging things could be said about her. “I can’t say if Ford was involved, but something was definitely off. It felt like an organized effort against us,” Judge mentioned. “For those who want to simplify what happened in the fall of 2018, it was just as Brett described: a crime.”
In a reflection on the aftermath, Judge admitted to ongoing struggles with PTSD from the experience.
