Controversy Over Women’s Locker Room Access
Singer Tish Hyman recently found herself at odds with Representative Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) regarding the issue of men entering women’s restrooms and locker rooms. Hyman, a lesbian living in Los Angeles, faced a gym ban after she publicly criticized a man for going into the women’s locker room.
“Stay out of the women’s locker room, we don’t want that!” Hyman exclaimed in a now-viral video.
She also posted about the incident on Instagram, expressing her frustration that she and other women had made multiple complaints to gym staff about this man’s behavior. “We reported him for coming into the women’s locker room and harassing me, but the gym staff did nothing!!” she wrote. “He has disrespected me repeatedly, and I felt ignored. But today, I made some noise!”
The man involved, identified as Alexis Black, was reported to have a criminal history, including a conviction for beating his ex-wife before undergoing a gender transition.
During a conversation at City Hall, Hyman pressed Khanna about his stance on allowing men into spaces designated for women. “You seem to care about women,” she pointed out. “But you mentioned in a Supreme Court brief that banning men from women’s spaces could lead to harassment through invasive inspections. Yet that hasn’t happened in the 26 states with such laws.” She argued that real harassment was occurring presently in California, including her own negative experiences with a convicted domestic abuser. “Why focus on hypothetical scenarios when we have real harassment happening here?” she added.
Khanna expressed empathy for Hyman but maintained that transgender individuals should have the right to use facilities matching their identity. “If someone is involved in domestic violence or harassment, that needs to be addressed legally,” he noted. “But this shouldn’t equate to denying rights to those who identify as transgender.”
Unyielding, Hyman reinforced her view that men are not women. “The state law offers no protection for women here. I’m a lesbian, and I experienced harassment in the locker room. This is a serious issue that needs attention,” she stated, pointing out that both political parties should take action on this matter. She emphasized the dangers faced by transgender individuals, stating, “Transgender people aren’t women; they’re men. It’s crucial that we tackle these problems openly.”
