Titans Coach Faces Scrutiny After Loss

Even if Brian Callahan’s coaching isn’t necessarily pushing him to the top of the list for being fired, his public criticism of the team’s first overall draft pick isn’t doing his job security any favors.

Following a disappointing 20-10 loss to the Raiders on Sunday, where rookie quarterback Cam Ward struggled once more, Callahan expressed his frustration about the team’s performance, particularly pointing out the higher draft picks.

“I’m really disappointed with how things turned out,” Callahan remarked after the team dropped to 1-5. “We felt good coming into this game. It’s unfortunate that we couldn’t deliver offensively, didn’t score, and ultimately lost. We all need to improve. Cam needs to step it up. We must coach better, play better—everything.”

“It’s not all on him, but he’s part of it, and we’re all looking for better play from everyone,” he added.

In his second year leading the Titans, Callahan hasn’t seen much success, to put it mildly. Last season, the team finished with a 3-14 record, which led to acquiring Ward as the top pick.

The anticipation surrounding the top quarterback in the draft raised expectations for the Titans, but the season has been anything but promising so far.

The evaluation of this team is likely to hinge more on Ward’s progress than on their overall win-loss record. Unfortunately, the early signs aren’t encouraging.

Ward has thrown only three touchdown passes against four interceptions, with a meager quarterback rating of 25.0, accumulating just 1,101 yards, averaging about 183.5 per game.

Completing only 55 percent of his passes and suffering a league-high 25 sacks, he hasn’t displayed the dual-threat capabilities that made him a highly sought-after draft pick.

During the defeat to a struggling Raiders team, Ward completed 26 out of 38 passes for 222 yards, a touchdown, and an interception, but also lost two fumbles. A particularly frustrating moment came late in the game when he fumbled while being pressured, halting the Titans’ final drive.

Ward previously expressed his frustration by saying “we’re shit,” a sentiment that might still ring true. Following Sunday’s game, he noted that the Titans lack “an efficient offensive line.”

“It’s really disappointing,” Ward said. “As an offense, myself included, we can’t win games with three turnovers. Two of those were particularly costly… I just need to eliminate mistakes. We have to keep looking ahead.”

The Titans have three upcoming games before their bye week, all against teams with winning records: the Patriots, Colts, and Chargers.

The focus will be on whether the Titans retain Callahan’s leadership, especially after watching Mike Vrabel get unexpectedly fired last season.

The future performance of the Titans is closely tied to Ward, for good or ill. Those involved with the team will have to evaluate whether Callahan, who leans on an offensive strategy, can effectively develop his quarterbacks or if they need to look for someone else.

“It’s unfortunate we’re in this position and can’t seem to play better offensively,” Callahan said. “That’s why we find ourselves where we are.”
