Titans coach Brian Callahan steps down from play-calling responsibilities

Titans Coach Assigns Play-Calling Duties to Quarterbacks Coach

In the wake of a discouraging start to the season, Titans head coach Brian Callahan has opted to hand over play-calling responsibilities to quarterbacks coach Beau Hardgley. After beginning the season with three consecutive losses, Callahan felt it necessary to shift focus.

On Tuesday, Callahan shared his rationale for this decision, stating it would enable him to concentrate more on the overall team rather than getting bogged down in the specifics of game preparation. “I think this is one of the best things for us right now. It helps me be more present as a head coach and less caught up in day-to-day call-making,” he explained. “I believe this will have a positive impact on our performance.”

It’s been a rough stretch for the Titans, who have a grim record of 3-17 since Callahan took the reins in January 2024. This past Sunday, they suffered a defeat at home, losing to the Colts 41-20. The team’s performance hasn’t been encouraging, having scored only 94 points while allowing 51 in their first three games.

Interestingly, Callahan is now among a handful of coaches since 2000 to win fewer than three games in their first 20 games. With rookie quarterback Cam Ward leading the charge—he was the team’s first draft pick—Tennessee currently ranks 28th in points per game with just 17, and an alarming 31st in total yards per game at 222.3.

Despite the changes, Callahan maintained that the team’s offensive game plan would remain largely unchanged and emphasized that play calling is still a “collaborative process.” “I didn’t see any issues with the play calls,” he remarked. “I’m not disappointed in any way; that’s just part of it. You have to look at the bigger picture.”

Hardgley, a native of Tennessee, was previously the quarterbacks coach for the Raiders, where he was elevated to interim offensive coordinator last year after the firing of head coach Josh McDaniels.

This weekend, the Titans will be on the road again, facing another struggling team, the Texans, at NRG Stadium.
