Titans decided against trading Mike Vrabel: ‘Too complicated’

Titans owner Amy Adams Slank confirmed Tuesday afternoon that the team considered the idea of a trade before ultimately waiving Mike Vrabel, but ultimately decided not to waive him. .

Vrabel is expected to receive a lot of interest from other teams with vacant head coaching positions, which leads some to wonder why the Titans didn't seek to reward the coach. There were also many.

However, Strunk argued in a press conference with the Titans' internal media that the process would take too long and affect the team's ability to find a new coach.

“Yes, there was, but there's a little bit of misunderstanding about coach contracts and player contracts,” Srank said. “The coaches' contracts don't allow you to trade them unless they're an active partner in that trade. So, certainly we thought about it, but at the end of the day, the league rules as they stand. If so, there will probably be a three week delay.

“And to be honest, in order to get the right head coach, we didn't want to take the chance of going to the back of the line and missing out on the guy we really wanted.”

There is currently no word that the Titans have requested interviews with candidates, but that process should begin within the next few days.

As for the future structure, Strunk could not say whether the new head coach will report to him or general manager Ran Carson, or who will manage the 53-man roster.

The Titans' owner also shot down the idea that only coaches with offensive backgrounds would be considered for the vacant position.

“Actually, no. I believe we need to improve across the board,” Strunk said. “So it’s important to find people who bring a lot of diverse ideas and fresh perspectives to the table.

“That's the most important thing in a new head coach.”
